An indexing notice is a reason to inspect
Google emailed us about pages excluded by noindex and an alternative page with a canonical tag. We opened the affected-URL lists before editing the site. Both categories were doing what we intended.
Check what each URL is for
Our four noindex examples were the saved collection, followed items, account page and matching app. These are personal or interactive workspaces. They are useful to a visitor without being useful standalone search results, so we kept their indexing exclusions.
Noindex is an indexing instruction, not an access control. Private account data still needs authentication and authorization. Removing the tag would not improve the underlying content or make that data safer.
Give duplicate views one destination
The canonical example was a student-news page with an audience query parameter. Its clean URL already represented the same view. The canonical tag directs search engines toward that preferred address instead of treating every filter variation as a separate article.
Google's documentation explains that alternative or duplicate classification can be expected. The practical check is whether the preferred destination is the page you intended, is reachable, and carries consistent canonical information.
Keep discovery separate from indexing
A sitemap helps search engines discover URLs. Successful submission does not guarantee that all of them will be indexed. We also saw newly crawled pages awaiting indexing, which is a different condition from a deliberate exclusion.
For a newly published article, check the live response, title, canonical, readable main content, internal links and sitemap entry. If those are correct, use URL Inspection to understand Google's view. Repeatedly changing dates or removing privacy protections is not a useful response to a waiting state.
Record the result, then do useful work
We recorded the examples and left the intentional exclusions in place. The next work was to improve what a reader can find: refreshed source reviews, a new weekly edition, and articles with clear next steps.
For your own site, keep a small table of the URL, reported reason, intended behaviour, live check and action. That turns a worrying email into an auditable decision. Revisit the report after meaningful changes, while allowing for Google's reporting and crawl delays.
